Zinc (Zn) is one of the eight essential micronutrients. It is needed by plants in small amounts, but yet crucial to plant development.
Deficiency in zinc might result in significant reduction in crop yields and quality. In fact, the yield can even be reduced by over 20%. The cost to the farmer, associated with loss of production, is by far higher than the cost of testing the soil and plant tissue and applying zinc fertilizers.
Symptoms of zinc deficiency include one or some of the following:
Stunting reduced height, Interveinal chlorosis, Brown spots on upper leaves, distorted leaves. It affects the main cereal crops: rice, wheat and maize as well as different fruit crops, vegetables and other types of crops.
Why EDTA used as chelator?
EDTA is an organic chelating compound which forms a strong and stable bond with Zn and makes it available for plant uptake. EDTA has many advantages over other chelators as it is stable in acidic and alkaline conditions. Its cheap and easily available than other chelators.
Comparison between ZnSO4 and Zn EDTA:
Zinc Sulphate (25 – 36%) is most commonly used as a source of Zn in plants, which is harmful to plants at some levels. Zinc EDTA chelate is easily translocated within the plants, unlike ZnSO4 which is partly systemic. ZnSO4 reduces phosphorous uptake while Zn-EDTA increases it. Zinc EDTA available to plant system very quickly. Zinc EDTA is versatile since it can be used for all crops and all kinds of soil.
